PLASTIC THUMBS INTERVIEW:
Did you enjoy doing the podcast? And where have you taken it?
Jonty: The podcast was fun. This is our fifth mixtape this year so we wanted to put something together a little different. This is I guess more, what makes us tick, stuff that's inspired us, produces we love and stuff we don't get to play in the clubs...
Seb: And of course there's still a load of face melters in there too.
When and why did you first start wanting to dj?
Seb: We both started about 10 years ago.
Jonty: I sucked at the guitar when I was younger so I figured if I can't make my own music, I'll play someone's who can.
Seb: My sisters mate had a set of decks he wanted to get rid of, I bought them off him as I had always wanted to get into it. The decks (Numark TT's) were dope, I actually only upgraded them to 1210's this year.
What was the sound that you started to dj with?
Jonty: I bought a mix CD by Prime Cuts when I was about 17. Hip Hop You Don't Stop. It's sick, even now. I wanted to play that shit. Classic golden era hip-hop. I also love all the Norman Jay Goodtimes comps, which introduced me to a lot of more obscure reggae, soul and funk. I used to buy pretty much all my records from Fatcity in Manchester which I guess influenced me. I'd just buy stuff I liked to listen to. I think that used to be my problem, I liked too many different types of music so my sets were always a bit all over the shop.
Seb: The decks I bought had a few Hard house records with them so I started heavy! A few years down the line I stumbled across a Fabriclive CD, it was number 04, Deadly Avenger. Still listen to it today, this compilation got me into Hip Hop/Breaks. I am now back on heavy stuff, I love a bit Filthstep
What Music is exciting you at the moment, and where do you see yourself going in terms of music?
Seb: erm....I dont know where to start. there is so much. Loving Flux Pavilion at the moment, he seems to be churning out some insane remixes. (the first time I heard his 'Gold Dust Remix' I nearly shit myself) also loving: Pretty Lights, Magnetic Man, Breakage, Rusko.
Jonty: I buzz off Toddla T and Diplo. Especially all the Major Lazer shit. They're really pushing the alternitive, fun and weird side of Jamacan music. Diplo can't put a foot wrong in my opinion apart from that Blackberry Ad. He's a genius. I also love Greenmoney, and Redlight - which I've just realised we haven't put any of Redlights music in the mix...
What Set up are you currently using at home and at the clubs?
Jonty: At the moment we just keep it simple. Serato and two 1210s.
Seb: We're looking to build on that for some live shows maybe bring in four turntables.
There is always this big debate about new technologies, things like Traktor, Ableton & Pioneers new CDJ 2000 vs traditional turntables, where do you stand with this?
Jonty: I think we both used to feel the same way too be honest. We were always really against new technologies. We both played with vinyl up until a few years a go. Which I think is in its own league, your so restricted.
Seb: Nowerdays we don't really care it makes sets more interesting and diverse. We played with Sbtrkt earlier this year and he did an Ableton set which was mental, really innovative, everything from old disco to nu-garage. As long as your smooth with the mixes and get the crowd doing, whatev's really.
Where is your favourite place in the world to go raving or to DJ?
Jonty: I love a good British festival. Cider, all day drinking and a good rave in the sunshine goes down a treat.
Seb: Yeh man. I'm also a big fan of KOKO's in london, it has a crazy good soundsystem.
Who is your biggest inspiration at the moment?
Seb: Major Lazer for sure, smashing it.
Jonty: Yes. Diplo is all over it... but I'd have to say Seb is my biggest inspiration. Only messing
Seb: That's super gay.
Jonty: I still love listening to all the oldies. Toots, Upsetters, Lee Perry. I'm also into a new sound called Moombahton, which is something Dave Nada has been playing around with. Kinda screwed down Dutch House around 110bpm
Who has been your biggest inspiration of all time?
Seb: It had to of been the Scratch perverts, When I saw a video of their DMC routine from 2000. Too good. Check it out on Youtube about 3mins in they start going nuts!
Jonty: Shiiieeet, thats a toughie... I guess DJ wise I'm with Seb. It would have to to be The Nextmen and Scratch Perverts when they were killing it a few years back, before they just started playing Dubstep. Their Fabriclive and Essential mixes are insane. They mixed up genres effortlessly. We also saw Nu-mark from J5 play at a festival a couple of years ago. He had just started using Serato and killed it. I thought I've gotta get into that.
How do you see the club scene in the uk at the moment? what do you think is going to happen in the next couple of years?
Jonty: The UK club/dance scene in my opinion is at the top of the game.
Seb: It's always pushed boundaries and think it will continue too.
Lastly: what has been you favourite record ever?
Jonty: Jesus that's a hard one on the spot... I'd say for nostalgic reasons Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day or Talking Heads - Once In A Life Time.
Seb: Dead Prez - Bigger Than... Fake fake, records records...
